Summer and Fireworks Eye Safety Tips
Summer is here, and this is the season for fun in the sun and celebrations that may include fireworks. Here at Wear Eyewear, our optometrists in Chicago and Orland Park have a few tips to keep you and your family’s eyes safe with these summer eye protection tips.
Get Stylish with UV Sunglasses
If you’re looking for eye protection on a budget, our optometrists in Orland Park and Chicago suggest getting a pair of stylish sunglasses that offer 100% protection from ultraviolet rays. There are a number of designers offering ‘sun’sational sunglasses in an array of styles and cost spectrums, and we can help you prescription sunglasses, too. Add a bit of flair to your new look with a wide brimmed hat for even extra protection.
Going Swimming? Goggle Up!
Whether you plan to hit the pool, the beach or take a dip in a river or lake, you should remove contact lenses if you wear them. Contacts can trap water borne bacteria and microorganisms next to your eyes and cause infections. Grab a pair of UV rated protection goggles and dive in!
Polarized Lenses Offer the Ultimate Summer Eye Protection
Intensify your summer fun with a good pair of sunglasses with polarized lenses. Thess help reduce the glare and intensity of reflective surfaces such as water and roadways. Polarized lenses are ideal for summer athletics and those who enjoy water sports.
Firework Eye Protection Tips from our Optometrists in Orland Park and Chicago
According to the US Consumer Product Safety Commission, more than 10,500 emergency room visits were caused by fireworks injuries, half of which were incurred by bystanders. Nearly 1300 of those injured suffered from eye injuries. Our optometrist in Chicago believes that firework eye protection such as goggles and safety glasses is a must!
Here are some tips to minimize damage in case an injury to the eye does occur due to a firework accident.
- Go to see a doctor right away!
- Avoid rubbing the eyes, which can spread particulates around.
- Don’t attempt to rinse the eye, as you can damage your lenses.
- Don’t apply pressure to the eye—no gauze or bandages.
- Do not apply any ointments to the eye that contaminate the area and make it more difficult to examine.
- Avoid pain medication or acetaminophen, as they aren’t likely to reduce pain and can thin the blood, which can be problematic with serious injuries.
